Ubuntu Karmic

Suprisingly I didn't read much about Karmic yet. But that will probably change in a few weeks, when its released. I upgraded my laptop and my desktop to karmic in the last week and I am quite impressed. The look & feel improved and everything is integrated very well. Shiny.

The desktop just connects... It also seems Ubuntu is slowly extending to the web with Ubuntu One. It seems quite cool. If you don't mind storing your documents at a 3rd party, it does give you a lot easiness with exchanging files between computers or with friends. It is obviously beta, but the core functionality seem to work well (synchronizing files) and it looks good.

KVM (virtualisation) integration also seems very promising, I will test that later.

Congres Open ICT voor beleidsmakers

NN-Open is currently organizing a congress for policy makers in the (semi)public sector. The congress is at 27 november 2008 in the Martiniplaza in Groningen. The congress is organized in the light of the actionplan "Nederland Open in Verbinding" (The Netherlands Open in Connection) to support the policy makers in adapting open source and open standards. One of the sponsors in NOiV which is responsible for "making it happen".

Since the congress is next week, most things are already taken care of and it looks like it will be a big success.

If your interested sign up at: http://congres.nn-open.nl/

I will be there too, so if you go, say hi. ;)

NN-Open Borrel – 10 October, Groningen

On the 10th of October we will have an interesting NN-Open borrel:

He is a sort of ambassador of Microsoft in the Netherlands which has to represent and explain the international policy, developments and vision of Microsoft. Likewise he also reports back about developments in the Netherlands. His talk will be followed up by discussion time.

Will be very interesting if you ask me! :)

All be invited. Full announcement in Dutch is available on the NN-Open website.

Sorry for the late annoucement on my blog. If you want to stay informed about NN-Open events better subscribe to the mailinglist at the nn-open.nl website.

Ubuntu-NL release party last Saturday

Yesterday I spoke about "Ubuntu in the office" at the Ubuntu-NL release party. I put the slides online (Dutch), so if someone wants to read back its possible.

I had the feeling the party was quite successful. In the workshop area everything seemed quite active and downstairs in the speaker area it was also quite lively. Combined with a pretty good atmosphere I think everyone can look back as time well spend.

In any case: Thanks to Matthijs and the others who organized the event, well done!

ps. Is there any official visitor count? Pictures online somewhere?

NN-Open: Hybridization (Virtualization)

On the 25th of April, NN-Open will organize an evening dedicated to hybrid networks or better said to virtualization.

  • 18.00-18.35 Peter Bosman (OSSO) will give a talk about the technical backgrounds of virtualization. With extra attention to the possibilities Open Source software provides in this field.
  • 18.35-18.45: Short break.
  • 18.45-19.15: Sytze van der Meer (municipality of Leeuwarden) will talk about the virtualization experiences of the municipality of Leeuwarden.

Since this is very close to the release of hardy I am thinking about giving a small demo/talk about virtualization in Ubuntu as well. Since I only use virtualization on the server side (Xen) I am all open for input to show off virtualization in an Ubuntu desktop.

Besides that, all are invited as far as I'm concerned, the event is located in Herebinnesingel 2, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Besides this there is much more to discuss and we hope to see those of you who are in Groningen or relatively close to it at that moment join in.

NN-Open borrel: GIS

For the Dutchies:

Komt allen!

Edubuntu presentation

Yesterday Mediaplaza organized an afternoon program about the possibilities of Linux and Open Source software in the educational system. As part of the program I gave an presentation where I introduced Edubuntu and the possibilities it offers. Followed up by a tour/workshop which allowed participants to get a little bit familiar with the Edubuntu GNOME environment.

I uploaded the presentation at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DutchTeamPresentations. Thanks to another presentation on this page I was also able to use a decent template instead of wasting time on making one which would look worse.

I didn't have time to follow edubuntu development for the last two releases but I was quite impressed with the LTSP improvements when I dived in a little in preparation of the presentation. Good work!
