Last week I came across the musicplayer BMPx and realized music players really have come a long way.
The first mediaplayer I used and can remember was Winamp 1.x, of which the first version was released in 1997. After that we got Winamp 2, etc. but the interface stayed more or less the same. In the Linux world you had the famous XMMS, and later the GTK2 based player BMP.
In the new millenium iTunes picked up as well which introduced a new type of interface. In the last few years you see players like Rhythmbox with a similar user interface gain popularity. Personally I am not too fond of the “iTunes style” interface but Rhythmbox integrates nicely with Gnome which is a real big plus.
When I “discovered” BMPx last week I got quite excited. Easy access to many internet radio stations, easy to retag your files, GTK2, very practical interface and good looking! After upgrading from Ubuntu Gutsy to Hardy it got even better. I found my new mediaplayer for now.

Aargh! I\’d finally settled for a long time with Rhythmbox, then just yesterday I settled with Sonata and now you show up with the excellent-looking BMPx. Sigh…
I’m the other way round, Vincent.
BMPx, then Rhythmbox, now I’m looking at the new Banshee and liking it.
Then you should try cmus.
While I use gnome for the desktop, I like Amarok due to not liking Rhythmbox. I’ll have to try BMPx, thanks.
Vincent, I wonder how will you feel if you see the new banshee…. sorry
